The study revealed that globally, more than 5 billion people do not consume enough iodine (68% of the global population), vitamin E (67%), and calcium (66%) through their diets. Furthermore, over 4 billion people lack adequate iron (65%), riboflavin (55%), folate (54%), and vitamin C (53%). This marks the first time scientists have used dietary intake data to estimate global micronutrient deficiencies.
South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, and the Pacific regions have the highest rates of calcium deficiency, particularly among individuals aged 10-30. In contrast, North America, Europe, and Central Asia have lower rates of calcium deficiency. Europe and Canada show lower rates of iodine deficiency, while vitamin E deficiency is most prevalent in Pacific Island nations. In China, the most common micronutrient deficiencies are vitamin E, vitamin A, and calcium.
Globally, women are more likely than men to be deficient in iodine, vitamin B12, iron, and selenium, while men are more prone to deficiencies in magnesium, vitamin B6, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin A, thiamine, and niacin. These statistics highlight a significant hidden health risk.
